Student Credit Cards: Eligibility and Everyday Costs
Compare student card eligibility, ongoing fees and simple rewards while building a payment plan that fits your income.
Student status alone does not establish card eligibility. Start with application requirements and affordability, then compare rewards on the purchases already in your budget.
Understand the under-21 requirements
For applicants under 21, issuers generally need evidence of independent ability to pay or a qualifying co-signer where offered. Do not assume family support or student status automatically satisfies an application. Follow the issuer’s instructions for reporting income.
Example: rewards at a student budget
On a hypothetical $300 in eligible monthly purchases, 1.5% cash back returns $54 per year. A 2% rate returns $72: an $18 difference before fees or interest. A small rewards improvement may be less important than avoiding an annual fee or choosing an account you can manage consistently.
Plan for life after graduation
Ask the issuer what happens to the account, fees and benefits when your student status changes. An automatic upgrade is not something to assume. Compare first-card basics and no-fee cards before applying.
