First Credit Card: A Practical Selection Checklist
Choose a first credit card by checking eligibility, fees, payment terms and a manageable spending plan.
Your first card should be easy to manage on your existing budget. A complicated bonus is less useful than clear fees, payment reminders and a limit you can comfortably repay.
Student or secured?
If eligible, compare student accounts with standard starter offers. If a deposit is required, make sure it will not consume money needed for bills. Read the student guide and secured-card guide for the different questions each application raises.
Example: start with a small routine
With a hypothetical $500 limit and a $40 recurring purchase, that purchase represents 8% of the limit before any other balance. This illustrates utilization, not an ideal score target or a guarantee. Budget for the full statement and monitor other charges, fees and the payment due date.
Before submitting an application
Confirm income requirements, ongoing fees, purchase APR and the issuer’s credit reporting. Set alerts and check that automatic payments have enough funds. Our grace-period glossary explains the term you will see in the account disclosure.
