Credit Cards for Bad Credit: Compare Fees and Access

Evaluate secured and unsecured credit-building options, upfront costs and reporting without guaranteed-approval claims.

Published by Fintiex · Guide updated Worked examples

When rebuilding credit, focus on an account you can afford to maintain. A product described as “for bad credit” is not a guarantee of approval or a promised score increase.

Compare the cost of access

List application or setup fees, annual fees, monthly maintenance charges and any required deposit. Confirm what the credit limit will be after fees charged to the account. Compare an unsecured offer with a secured card instead of assuming no deposit means lower cost.

Example: a monthly charge adds up

A hypothetical $75 annual fee plus a $10 monthly maintenance charge costs $195 over a full year when both apply for all 12 months. That is before interest or other fees. A deposit has different return conditions, so do not count it as an annual fee when comparing products.

Check your starting point

Review your credit report for errors and understand hard inquiries before making several applications. Credit rebuilding takes time; choose a payment amount and due-date routine you can sustain.
