Is MoneyLion Legit? Instacash Costs and Repayment | Fintiex

Is MoneyLion legit? A look at Instacash from MoneyLion's own pages: what is free, what the optional Turbo fee costs, how automatic repayment works, and who it fits.

By Fintiex EditorialUpdated November 2, 20265 min read

MoneyLion is a legitimate, well known finance app run by MoneyLion Technologies Inc. (NMLS ID 1237506, as listed on its site). It offers cash advances, a Credit Builder Plus program, investing, and credit monitoring. Most people searching "is MoneyLion legit" are really asking about one feature, the Instacash advance, so that is what this page focuses on. The product details below come from the official Instacash page, checked on November 2, 2026.

What Instacash is

Instacash is a cash advance on pay you have coming. MoneyLion says there is no interest, no monthly fee, no credit check, and no mandatory fee. You link the checking account where your paycheck lands, MoneyLion reviews it, and the app shows how much you can take.

The limits work in two steps. Once MoneyLion can see recurring direct deposits and predict your payday, the page says you can get up to $500. Switching your direct deposit into a MoneyLion Spend account can raise that to as much as $1,000, depending on your income. Each disbursement is capped at $100, so a larger amount comes out in pieces. You can take a new advance once the last one is repaid, as long as you still qualify.

MoneyLion Spend is a deposit account, not a bank in its own right. The page's footer says Spend accounts are held at Pathward, National Association, Member FDIC, and that MoneyLion itself is not a bank.

Where the cost comes in

Free is accurate, but only on the slow path. MoneyLion lists two ways to get the money:

Where the money goesStandard deliveryTurbo delivery (within minutes)
MoneyLion Spend account$0, 1 to 2 business days7.5% of the advance, capped at $14.99
Outside debit card or checking accountNot available9% of the advance

Tips are optional too, and MoneyLion says tipping, or paying for Turbo, does not change your eligibility, access, or limit.

What Turbo costs in APR terms

A flat percentage looks small until you put it on a yearly scale. Here is the math on a single $100 disbursement repaid 14 days later:

DeliveryFeeCost as an annual rate
Standard to Spend$00%
Turbo to Spend$7.50about 196%
Turbo to an outside card$9.00about 235%

The annual figure is the fee divided by the advance, times 365, divided by 14 days. It's an illustration, not a quoted APR, and your real repayment date follows your pay cycle. The point is simple: if you can wait a day or two for standard delivery, do. If you use Turbo every payday, Instacash stops being cheap.

How repayment works

Repayment is automatic. On your scheduled date, MoneyLion debits the advance plus any Turbo fee or tip from your Spend account, a linked debit card, or your linked checking account. Its page says that if the balance is short, it may take a partial payment and try again until the advance is repaid. If that still fails, it may debit other payment methods saved in your MoneyLion wallet. You have the right to withdraw a payment authorization, but the debt doesn't go away.

That matters if your account often runs close to zero, because repeated debit attempts can collide with rent, card payments, or overdraft fees at your own bank.

Who qualifies

MoneyLion says your linked checking account should:

  • have been open at least two months,
  • show regular income deposits,
  • keep a positive balance, and
  • be in active use.

Savings and money market accounts don't qualify, and your identity details must match your bank and public records. The page also says Credit Builder Plus members with late or missed loan payments may lose Instacash access until the account is back in good standing.

How to request an advance

  1. Download the MoneyLion app and sign up.
  2. Link the checking account where your pay arrives.
  3. Open Instacash in the app and tap Request.
  4. Pick the amount, up to $100 per disbursement, and choose standard or Turbo delivery.
  5. Note the repayment date the app shows before you confirm.

The CFPB case, and what it means for you

Legit doesn't mean spotless. In September 2022 the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued MoneyLion over its ML Plus and Credit Builder Plus loans and membership programs. The Bureau alleged that MoneyLion charged active-duty servicemembers and their dependents more than the Military Lending Act allows, and that it kept charging membership fees to people who had asked to cancel. In November 2025 the court entered a settlement in which MoneyLion agreed to pay $1.75 million in consumer redress, without admitting or denying the claims (CFPB enforcement action).

The case was about memberships and installment loans, not Instacash itself. Still, it's a reason to read any paid membership's cancellation terms before you join, and to check your statements after you cancel.

Is MoneyLion a good idea for you?

It can be a reasonable bridge if you choose free delivery, take only what you need, and know the repayment date lines up with your paycheck. It's a poor fit if you rely on Turbo every time, or take a new advance as soon as the last one is repaid.

For comparisons, see our Super.com cash advance review, which uses a monthly membership instead of per-advance fees, our Klover review, and the Fintiex cash advance glossary entry. If you need a larger amount over several months, a personal loan may be cheaper overall. Our guide to APR vs APY explains the yearly-rate math used above.

Bottom line

MoneyLion is legit, and Instacash can genuinely be free. The cost shows up in Turbo fees and in how often you use it, and the CFPB settlement is a good reminder to read membership terms closely. This page is general information, not financial advice. Check the current terms in the app before you request an advance.

Frequently asked questions
