Balance Transfer Cards: Fees and Payoff Planning
Compare transfer fees, promotional deadlines and monthly payoff targets before moving credit card debt.
A balance transfer is useful when the interest avoided exceeds the transfer cost and the repayment plan fits your budget. The longest promotion is only one part of that calculation.
Check four terms before transferring
Confirm the transfer fee, deadline for completing an eligible transfer, promotional duration and APR afterward. Check whether your existing issuer is eligible and whether the approved credit limit can accommodate both the transfer and its fee.
Example: turn the offer into a monthly target
For a hypothetical $6,000 transfer with a 3% fee, the starting balance is $6,180. Paying it off in 18 equal monthly payments at 0% requires about $343.34 per month, with a smaller final payment for rounding. A 5% fee raises the balance to $6,300 and the target to $350. These are examples, not advertised offers.
Keep new purchases separate
Carrying a promotional transfer can cause new purchases to accrue interest even when the transfer is at 0%. Check the purchase terms. Use the balance transfer calculator and compare with paying down the existing card.
